Mr. Han Shu
Data Science Manager at AirBnB
Han Shu is a Data Science Manager at Airbnb. At Airbnb, he leads the Data Science effort to use Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing to improve the efficiency and user experience of the customer contact center. He joined Airbnb in 2014 when Wyth was acquired. Han cofounded Wyth in 2013 after raising venture funding from CRV and Matrix Partners. Wyth developed mobile personal assistance technology for collaborative productivity mobile applications.
Prior to Wyth, Han cofounded Vlingo in 2006. Vlingo at one time supplied Speech Recognition technology to Apple’s Siri. The Vlingo product continues to power Samsung S Voice Mobile App (Samsung’s Siri) on over 100M Samsung Galaxy phones. At Vlingo, Han demonstrated the feasibility of low-latency very large vocabulary speech recognition for mobile phone speech and built the entire natural language processing stack. Vlingo was acquired by Nuance for over $200MM in 2012.
Han has been active in the fields of speech and pattern recognition for close to twenty years, prior to joining Vlingo, at both MIT and BBN. At BBN's Speech and Language group, a DARPA-funded leading speech recognition research site, he invented new algorithms for handwriting recognition, face recognition, speech recognition, and information retrieval-based directory assistance. He also led BBN's winning effort for a large vocabulary Mandarin Chinese system, part of the Hub-5 speech recognition evaluation sponsored by NIST and DARPA. At MIT's Spoken Language Systems group, he invented new training algorithms for a segmental speech recognition system based on finite-state transducers, and formulated multi-tape finite-state transducers for the problem of multi-stream speech recognition. Han holds Ph.D., M.Eng., and B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT, and over 25 Patents.
